Commercially, Australia’s second sport is rugby league, which is particularly big on the country’s east coast with Queensland’s Brisbane Broncos the biggest club by earnings followed by a group of teams from New South Wales and Queensland including the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Newcastle and Sydney Rabbitohs. Melbourne Storm is the most successful club outside the two dominant states and has won the Grand Final three times in the past ten years, although on two of those occasions, the title was stripped due to salary cap breaches.

Telecommunications, despite having just 1% of deals by number, is the biggest investor in rugby league solely as a result of the Telstra title sponsorship of the NRL’s Premiership at $21 million per year, however part of that sum is believed to include new media rights.

After this values drop dramatically, with Suncorp’s naming rights deal in Brisbane (home to the Brisbane Broncos) second at $5 million, although this deal should take into account the fact that Queensland Reds (Super Rugby) and Brisbane Roar (soccer) also use the stadium.

Holden’s sponsorship of the State of Origin series is the next largest deal at $3.47 million, with major club sponsorships generally in the region of $1.2 million.
